How Are Le Chameau Wellies Made?

Cosy, comfy, waterproof and completely practical, Le Chameau wellies are made for the wet and chilly winter weather. These cold weather wellies are a favourite among farmers, dog walkers and horse riders due to their robust longevity and all-day comfort, leaving many people wondering what exactly their secret is and how Le Chameau wellies made are.

Le Chameau VierzonordWhere are Le Chameau wellies made?

Back in 1949, French founder Claude Chamot moved production of his footwear brand to Morocco. Inspired by his new Moroccan surroundings, it was also at this time that the name ‘Le Chameau’ aka “the Camel” was born. To this day Chameau boots are still made in Casablanca, Morocco, and are handcrafted by a single Master Bootmaker.

How are Le Chameau boots made?

Each pair of Chameau wellies are handcrafted by one of the brand’s Master Bootmakers (also known as a Maître Bottier!). The company takes the production of their boots very seriously, and the skills used to make these iconic wellington boots has been passed down between generations since the brand’s founding all the way back in 1927. So highly-regarded are these skills, that it takes nine months of training to become a Chameau Maître Bottier.

One reason why the Le Chameau Vierzonord is such a popular welly in comparison to other brands, is because the rubber is so soft and supple that it doesn’t crack (and a key reason as to why Le Chameau is worth the money!). The rubber used is a natural rubber which has extremely high elasticity properties to give it that lovely, supple feeling. This also means that the range of rubber boots are 100% vegan (excluding styles with wool or leather linings). Le Chameau neoprene lined wellies

Once the rubber is ready, it will be hand-cut and trimmed ready for the Maître Bottier to combine together with the prepped soles and linings. To achieve the perfect Chameau shape, the rubber is stretched over an aluminium boot before all of the details are added. The next phase of the boot-making process is vulcanisation, which essentially “cooks” the rubber until it becomes as flexible and durable as needs be to meet Chameau’s high standard of quality control.

After the boot has cooled down, the next step is testing for that all-important waterproofness. Once the testing in water is complete and the boot is signed off as fully waterproof, it has one final polish before leaving the Chameau factory.

Built to last

Each pair of these classic wellington boots are handcrafted for ultimate quality and durability. This tried and tested technique has created footwear which is built to last. So confident are Le Chameau in the long lifespan of their boots, that they offer a two year warranty on every pair. That means that in the unlikely event that something was to happen to your wellies within the first two years, the team at Chameau will replace them for you for free!

Wellies for every event

Le Chameau neoprene wellies, aka the Vierzonord, is a staple of rural life and has become beloved by welly wearers all across the world. These boots are so popular that they regularly fly out of stock, and it’s easy to see why:

These neoprene boots are:

  • Hand-crafted
  • Adjustable
  • Warm in temperatures as low as -15°C
  • Fully waterproof
  • Abrasion-resistant
  • Shock-absorbing

It’s for these reasons that the Vierzonords are loved and worn by so many people. Farmers love them for their durability, equestrians love them for their warmth and everyone else loves them for how comfortable they are.
